Tyre Changers
Tire technicians receive assistance from a machine called a tyre changer when they need to mount or dismount tyres. A tyre changer is equipped with all the necessary components needed to remove a tyre as well as replace them too. For different automobiles and machinery, different tyre changers would be needed.
The components that make up a tyre changer
- A tyre changer consists of two foot pedals, the left pedal is a three position pedal known as the clamp control, it controls the rim clamps. Pneumatic pistons are pressed and then they move the four rim clamps at the same time, pushing them apart and bringing them together. The pedal on the right side is known as the table top pedal which controls the rotation of a table top. When this pedal is pressed, it makes the table top spin clockwise, and when the pedal is raised, it makes the table top spin counterclockwise.
- Demount and mount mechanisms consist of a vertical slide, duckhead and a swing arm. At the bottom of the vertical slide sits the duckhead. The duckhead surrounds the rim and is oddly shaped like a bill that is tapered, it is also either made from plastic or metal. The tire is mounted and demounted from the wheel by the use of the duckhead. The duckhead is moved away from or towards the rim through the use of the swing arm, which moves to the left and right. The vertical slide is the final component to the mechanism. It moves in an upward and downward direction to make it possible for the duckhead to fit on the rims of various sizes of wheels. In order for the duckhead to maintain an be set in a stable position the locking handle and spring on the vertical slide are used.
- Rim clips and a table top rotate and hold the wheel in order to dismount or mount a tire. The table top is positioned above the foot pedals and under the demount and mount mechanism. On some tyre changers the table top is shaped as a circle but on some might be shaped as an "X"; and it can move in a clockwise or counter clockwise position. There are rim clamps that are pneumatic-powered on the ends of the table top.
- The tyre beds on rims are released through the use of a Bead loosening system. It consists of an arm that is positioned close to the bottom right-hand side of a tyre changer. A bead loosener shoe is a shovel shaped piece of metal that is situated at the end of the arm. The shoe pivots and is round in shape in order to mimic the shape of a wheel. In order not to scratch the rims and wheels the metal piece contains squares made from rubber.
